Largely a rural community with many farms and acreages in addition to single-family homes, Cedar’s residents have their daily needs met in the amenities found locally while Nanaimo is only a short drive away. Properties in Cedar are typically listed at a more affordable price point when compared to most other Nanaimo neighbourhoods while areas like Yellow Point and Cedar By The Sea do cater to the luxury waterfront property market making Cedar a great place to call home.
There is one elementary school for students from K to Grade 7 in Cedar, Cedar Elementary, as well as one secondary school, Cedar Secondary, for students from Grade 8 to Grade 12.

Though not densely populated, the Cedar area offers several dining opportunities that please locals and area residents alike: there are two British inspired public houses, the Crow and Gate Pub and the Wheatsheaf Pub; fine dining in the casual setting of the Mahle House a restored heritage home on an acre of English-style gardens and built in 1904; the Coco Cafe offering breakfast and lunch options, while the Cassidy Country Kitchen on the border with Extension offers home-cooked meals.
The Cedar area boasts provincial and regional parks most notably the forested Hemer Provincial Park. Located on peaceful Holden Lake, the park is home to an 11km extensive trail system and is also a popular destination for nature lovers, paddlers, boaters, and anglers. Also in the area is the Nanaimo River Regional Park - a mature, natural forest situated along the Nanaimo River, offering in its 56 hectares a wildlife habitat, a network of trails for walkers, mountain bikers, and nature lovers as well as swimming and fishing for those looking for offshore pursuits. Despite its name the Chase River Estuary Park is also located in the Cedar area (though borders the Chase River community) with views of the tidal mouth of the Chase River this parkland offers over 1 km of trails and boardwalks and bird watching opportunities.
