With its proximity to the Old City, residents of South Nanaimo are a stone's throw from all that the downtown core offers from exhibitions and galleries to a public library and a casino while many festivals and community events are hosted at the Maffeo Sutton Park on the harbour front throughout the year. The nearby University District offers Splitsville for bowling and arcade games while the entertainment options in all other communities are close at hand with both highways running through the South Nanaimo area.
There are several restaurant options in the South Nanaimo area appealing to a variety of tastes from authentic Mexican at Baby Salsa to chicken, Chinese, family-style diners, and fast food options. South Nanaimo offers its residents several neighbourhood parks and sports fields in addition to many well-loved attractions: The historical Colliery Dam Park in South Nanaimo is very popular in the warmer weather as a freshwater swimming spot but is also well frequented all year round by walkers, hikers, and dog walkers (off-leash during certain hours); while the 2 hectare Petroglyph Provincial Park bordering Chase River, features petroglyphs created by First Nations peoples more than 1,000 years ago.
