If you would like to stay in the north end, close to all amenities but at a lower price point than neighbouring North Nanaimo commands, Uplands will appeal to you.
Offering more affordable housing, Uplands is a great place for families with quiet neighbourhoods, good shopping options, and recreational activities a stone’s throw away. For those with a higher budget Long Lake Heights is a bare land strata community that has stunning lake views and properties that cascade down the hillside to the lake.
There is one elementary school for students from K to Grade 7 in the Uplands area of Nanaimo, Uplands Park as well as one secondary school, Wellington located in Departure Bay, for students from Grade 8 to Grade 12.
There are two main shopping areas in Uplands, both of which run along the Island Hwy: The Country Club Centre and the North Nanaimo Town Centre. Featuring a variety of big-box chain stores and specialty shops, residents can source liquor stores, groceries, pharmaceuticals, furniture & home decor, clothing & shoes, electrical goods, pet supplies, hunting, fishing & outdoor gear, automotive, DIY & landscaping supplies among the many offerings.
Recreational pursuits in the Uplands area encompass all manner of activity both inside and out and on and offshore and are typically available on a year-round basis. Long Lake, 14 metres at its deepest point, offers a sandy beach for fairer weather activities as well as a multitude of offshore pursuits for swimmers, rowers, motorboat and jet ski enthusiasts, and fishermen. A gentle walking trail runs along the shoreline while a more varied, rural walking and hiking experience is found in the forested wilderness park accessible from Uplands.
Bordering several different Nanaimo communities and within close proximity to the highway, those living in Uplands are never far from a variety of entertainment options from watching a Clippers game at the Frank Crane Arena in Beban Park, to bowling at Splitsville in the University District and for more cultural events - plays, art collections, and museum exhibits in the Old City; in addition, and closer to home, the Uplands area also offers its own cinema, the Cineplex Galaxy, for moviegoers.
Located between North Nanaimo and Departure Bay, the Uplands area offers not only easy access to restaurants in its neighbouring communities but also a range of eating establishments in the local area. Well-known chains like Montana's BBQ & Bar and Original Joe's Restaurant can be relied upon for a variety of traditional food choices, there are also a number of fast-food options for burgers, donuts, and sandwiches, as well options for Sushi, Chinese food, and pub fare.
There are several parks throughout the Uplands community, the Loudon Park & Trail, and Lakeview Park border Long Lake, while many residential neighbourhoods enjoy a green space often offering a play area for children. The Linley Valley (Cottle Lake) Park is accessed from Uplands, a forested wilderness park that includes groomed trails and maintained boardwalks and which is appropriate for all fitness levels.
