Comprising a great variety of single-family homes, townhomes, condos, and patio homes there is an affordable housing option in South Nanaimo sure to suit almost any need. The process of revitalization has begun in the area and though much work is still to be done, many of the old, rundown buildings have already been repurposed with newer subdivisions and income properties being developed in the area.
There are three elementary schools for students from K to Grade 7 in South Nanaimo: Bayview, Georgia Avenue, and Park Avenue as well as one secondary school, John Barsby, for students from Grade 8 to Grade 12.
The University Village Mall located in South Nanaimo provides area residents with a grocery store, drug store, dollar store, and pet supplies, among other retailers, while all the amenities of the Old City are just a few minutes’ drive away.
The South Nanaimo area offers its residents close proximity to the recreational opportunities found in the Old City and other south-end communities. On its own doorstep, however, are sports fields and playgrounds, and a number of parklands and attractions that provide the perfect venue for walking, biking, hiking, and swimming.
With its proximity to the Old City, residents of South Nanaimo are a stone's throw from all that the downtown core offers from exhibitions and galleries to a public library and a casino while many festivals and community events are hosted at the Maffeo Sutton Park on the harbour front throughout the year. The nearby University District offers Splitsville for bowling and arcade games while the entertainment options in all other communities are close at hand with both highways running through the South Nanaimo area.
There are several restaurant options in the South Nanaimo area appealing to a variety of tastes from authentic Mexican at Baby Salsa to chicken, Chinese, family-style diners, and fast food options. Those looking for a more unique venue won’t go wrong with the Calico Cat Tea House, Nanaimo’s premier tea house offering homemade food served in a charming character home built in 1910.
South Nanaimo offers its residents several neighbourhood parks and sports fields in addition to many well-loved attractions: The historical Colliery Dam Park in South Nanaimo is very popular in the warmer weather as a freshwater swimming spot but is also well frequented all year round by walkers, hikers, and dog walkers (off-leash during certain hours); while the 2 hectare Petroglyph Provincial Park bordering Chase River, features petroglyphs created by First Nations peoples more than 1,000 years ago.
